Using Wireless Laptop Computers at Del Mar College Library

With our Wireless laptop computers, students can work from almost anywhere in the library and access:

DMCnet Library Catalog

Research Resources, such as EBSCO

Other online resources via the Internet

How can I get one?

Wireless Laptops are available on a first-come, first-served basis at the Access Services Desk of either the William F. White, Jr. Library or Barth Learning Resources Center

Students must have a DMC ID with the current semester's validation sticker in order to check-out a laptop

Are there any restrictions?

As with any other DMC computing resource, use of the wireless laptops are governed by the Del Mar College Computer and Network Resources Statement of Acceptable Use

Checkout time is generally restricted to a two-hour time limit

Laptops must never be left unattended. Students are financially responsible for the wireless laptop that is checked out.

Students may not add or delete any software or make changes that affect the performance of the computer.

Library-owned laptops may only be used in the library.

Students may not store files on the laptop computer.

Save your data using a flashdrive, CD-R, or aCD-RW disk. CD-RW disks are available for purchase at Library Access Services.

If you need to save your work on a floppy disk, bring the laptop computer back to Library Access Services before beginning your work and ask for assistance.

WARNING: Any files saved to the laptop computer's hard drive are automatically deleted at shutdown.

Where can I use it in the William F. White Jr. Library (East Campus)?

Anywhere in the library, except the sound proof room on 2nd floor.

Where can I use it at Barth Learning Resources Center (West Campus)?

Anywhere in the library!

What software is on the laptops?

Microsoft Windows XP Professional Operating System

Microsoft Office 2007 (Word, Access, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher)

Internet Explorer

Browser Plug-ins such as Adobe Acrobat Reader

Students needing other software are encouraged to use the resources in the Student Technology Center

Can I use my own wireless laptop in the library?

Students may use their own wireless laptops in the library if:

Their wireless computer has been registered with the DMC Information Technology HelpDesk. Call (361) 698-2330 for more information on wireless registration.
