MISSION STATEMENT
The Del Mar College Library System, an integral part of Del Mar College, is dedicated to providing access to those learning resources which embrace educational opportunities for all persons, regardless of race, sex, religion, national origin, or disability.
Specifically, the library has the following purposes:
- To assist the College in carrying out its mission by providing supplemental learning resources;
- To assist faculty members by providing media to support classroom and college activities;
- To provide access to computer technology for instructional support and independent research;
- To support the occupational, academic, and pre-professional programs of the College by providing print and non-print resources pertinent to each area of instruction;
- To supplement the instructional program by training students to evaluate and use various library resources both through formalized bibliographic instruction and through point-of-use instruction;
- To provide an environment which encourages lifelong learning in occupational and vocational interests and in personal enrichment.

COLLECTION
DEVELOPMENT/MATERIALS SELECTION POLICY
Basic
Purpose and Process:
In support of the library's mission, library staff, working with
instructional faculty, are responsible for selecting library resources
in the appropriate subject fields and in the most useful formats-print,
non-print, electronic, etc. Library staff members budget, order and process
all library materials. The library notifies department and program administrators
of funds allocated to their areas. Program administrators and faculty
submit recommendations for library purchases. Librarians make additional
recommendations for the program areas they oversee and for the reference
collection.
Priorities
in Resource Orders: In order
to maximize the budget for library resources, titles or ordered in a cost-effective
manner. Library resources are selected according to the following priorities.
- Materials which directly
meet student curricular needs, including required reading, viewing,
or listening; collateral reading, viewing or listening; and material
to support student papers and reports, including those reference and
bibliographical works which will facilitate finding and using these
materials.
- Materials which are needed
for faculty preparation of class instruction.
- Materials which round out
the collection, permitting as much latitude as possible for students
pursuing course-related inquiries on both current and historical subjects.
- Materials for faculty
development.

Representative
works of high caliber which might arouse intellectual curiosity, counteract
parochialism, help to develop critical thinking and cultural appreciation,
and stimulate use of resources for continuing education and personal
development.

Leisure
reading/viewing materials which are of literary/artistic merit or
interest.
Gifts
to the library: The library
will accept gifts in a variety of formats. Gifts must come with no conditions
attached to their acceptance, and they must comply with the same standards
used in the selection of purchased library resources.
Periodical
resources: Periodical resources represent a long-term
investment by the library since they are a continuing annual expense.
Library staff and instructional faculty must work closely in the collection
of periodical resources. A separate policy and procedure for the addition
and elimination of periodicals from the library collection is in place.

Weeding
of library collection: In
order to keep the library collection vital, there must be ongoing assessment
of materials to insure their continued value. Materials no longer meeting
priorities for selection will be considered for withdrawal. Other items
meriting discard are unnecessary duplicate titles, superseded editions,
and damaged resources. Librarians and other designated library staff members,
assisted by instructional faculty, are responsible for systematically
evaluating all of the library's resources.

PERIODICALS
COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT POLICY
The periodicals
collection of the Del Mar College libraries, like other library materials
collections, is intended to support the curriculum being taught by the
college. Because of the ongoing financial and storage commitment made
by the library and because of the need to provide appropriate access to
information available in periodicals, the decision to purchase a particular
title requires more study and justification than the one-time purchase
of an individual book or media title. Criteria for the purchase of periodicals
include the consideration of the following:
- Is
the periodical indexed in a index currently owned by the library?
- Does the periodical support
study of a particular subject in the Del Mar curriculum or does it provide
appropriate material for students to use as research for writing papers
for class?
- Is the periodical written
at a level appropriate to Del Mar students?
- Is the pertinence of the
periodical title to a community college curriculum supported by documentation
from a subject-specific authority?
- Is the periodical in a format which can be accommodated by the
Del Mar libraries?
Elimination of periodical
titles from the library collections may sometimes be necessary. Such eliminations
may be based on many factors including consideration of the following:
- Has
the focus or level of the periodical changed since its original purchase
to the extent the title is no longer appropriate to the libraries and/or
curriculum? Has the program originally requesting the title disbanded
or changed emphasis?
- Has the cost of the periodical
become prohibitively expensive?
- Is the periodical being
used very little or not at all, based on library use statistics?
- Is the periodical available
elsewhere in the community or in an alternative format already in the
library?
- Is the physical maintenance
of the periodical more problematic than its value to the curriculum
it supports?
- Has the publisher ceased
to publish the title?
- Does the department initially
requesting the title no longer see the value of the title to the library
collection?

THE
LIBRARIES
William
F. White Jr. Library
The White Library, East
Campus, is the central library for the College. All library materials
are purchased and processed here. The library provides delivery of equipment
and software to classrooms. It has viewing and listening stations and
typewriters available to students for in-library use. The Student Technology
Center contains computer workstations, various computer peripherals,
Internet access and a variety of software in a networked environment.
Reference services include traditional reference desk assistance, formal
library instruction, and access to an automated network of reference
resources and the Internet. Small group study rooms are available on
a first come, first served basis on the second, third, and fifth floors. Generally, groups
of two (2) or more have priority in the study rooms.
There are several classrooms/ meeting rooms, some equipped with computers,
which may be reserved for use by instructors. Notebook computers can be checked out at the Access Services desk for use within the library.
Howard E. Barth Learning Resources Center The Howard E. Barth Learning Resources Center contains books, periodicals,
electronic databases, and audiovisual materials to support the programs
on the West Campus. The library provides delivery of equipment and software yto classrooms. The Student Technology area offers computer workstations,
various computer peripherals, Internet access, and a variety of software in a networked
environment. AV stations, drafting tables, a copier, a typewriter, and study rooms
are also available. Reference services include traditional reference desk assistance, formal bibliographic instruction, and access to e-reference resources. The library contains several group study rooms and a lecture/computer classroom for library instruction and other uses. Notebook computers are available at the Circulation desk for in-library use.

GENERAL
INFORMATION
Some
Basic Rules
Smoking
is prohibited in the library. For the protection of the furnishings and
the collections, only drinks with spill proof lids and small snacks may
be eaten in the library. Anyone whose behavior is disruptive to others
using the library will be asked to leave the premises. To maintain an
appropriate atmosphere for study the use of cell phones is restricted
to the lobby. Children MUST NOT be left unattended in
the libraries.
Copy
Machines
There
are coin-operated photocopiers and microfilm reader-printers in the libraries.
The charge is 10 cents per copy. The individual making the copies assumes
responsibility for compliance with the copyright laws.
Book
Security
The Del Mar Libraries utilize
an electronic security system to ensure that all materials are properly
checked out.
Use
of Materials and Facilities
Anyone may use the books, periodicals, and other materials in the library. Currently enrolled Del Mar College, Coastal Bend College, Texas A&M University–Corpus Christi, Texas A&M University–Kingsville and University of the Incarnate Word students, faculty, and staff may check out materials. Borrowers must present their current validated ID card when checking out books or other materials. Anyone may use books, periodicals, audiovisual equipment and other materials within the library. Use of the Student Technology Center (STC) is restricted to Del Mar College and University of the Incarnate Word students and staff with current ID’s bearing the Computer and Network Resource Acceptable Usage Policy (AUP) sticker. However, the libraries provide limited computer access to the general public as a community service. Community users must abide by all college policies when using college computers.
Loan
Period and Fines
Students taking courses for college credit may check out books from
the general collection for two (2) weeks with one renewal if the books
have not been requested by another patron. These students may have a
total of fifteen (15) books checked out. Other categories of students
may be limited on time periods and number of books allowed. Overdue materials
may cause a block to be placed on a borrower’s record, which will
prevent additional borrowing until items are returned. When materials
become twenty-eight (28) days late a hold is placed on the patron’s
library record. A student with a hold on his/her record will not be allowed
to register for the next semester nor will he/she be able to obtain transcripts
until overdue materials are returned. If library items borrowed are damaged
or lost, the borrower of record will be required to pay the cost of the
damage or loss. Reference materials, periodicals, and most audiovisual
materials are for use in the library only.
Interlibrary
Loan (ILL)
When
students need material for their assignments and the library does not
have it, Del Mar College students may request an interlibrary loan. Students
should begin the process at the reference desk. Reference librarians assist
students in locating materials needed and if the library does not have
the materials the student is referred to the interlibrary loan office.
Students need a current, validated Del Mar College ID to place a request
for an ILL. Library staff notify students when the ILL is available. Interlibrary
loans may take as long as two (2) weeks to receive. Students should be
aware that ILL materials are on loan for a limited time and should make
every effort to pick-up the ILL material within one (1) week. If a renewal
is needed the renewal request must be made four (4) days before
the due date. Since books received through interlibrary loan
are on loan to our library it is very important that due dates be noted
and books returned to the interlibrary loan office on time so that we
maintain a good borrowing status with other institutions. Interlibrary
loan service is also offered to all Del Mar College faculty and staff.

CAMPUS COMPUTER POLICY
Individuals who are granted the privilege to use the computer and/or network resources of Del Mar College agree to accept responsibility for reasonable use. Activities beyond those stated in the Del Mar College Computer and Network Use Policy (Del Mar College Manual of Policies and Procedures, B3.23; A3.23.1-A3.23.3.12) are strictly prohibited. Del Mar College computer and network resources may be accessed by authorized users only. Students must be currently registered to use these DMC resources. Anyone using these resources expressly consents to being monitored. If monitoring reveals possible evidence of any activity violating the DMC Computer and Network Resources Use Policy appropriate action will be taken.
- Individuals shall use only those resources and computer accounts which have been authorized for their use. All computing work must be identified with the individual’s name or approved ID.
- Individuals are responsible for any activity involving their computer accounts. Individuals are responsible for implementing protective measures for their accounts. Individuals should safeguard their passwords, change passwords frequently, and take precautions against others obtaining access to their computer resources.
- Individuals shall use accounts for legitimate purposes only. For example, accounts shall not be used for private consulting or personal gain. Individuals using these computer resources without authorization or in excess of their authorization are subject to being monitored. Users are expressly forbidden to use these resources to upload/download or transmit obscene or pornographic material or material contrary to the DMC Statement of Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action.
- Individuals shall not attempt to access, copy, or destroy programs or files that belong to other users or the college without obtaining prior authorization. Users shall not attempt to modify system configurations on DMC computer or network resources.
- Individuals shall not willfully create, copy, or disseminate computer viruses nor threaten to install or to infect the college’s computer resources with any virus.

FLOOR

Access
Services Area: All library materials
and equipment are checked out here. Faculty reserves, interlibrary loans, room and
equipment scheduling are also arranged here.
Audiovisual
(AV) Viewing Room: A variety
of audiovisual equipment is available for viewing AV resources. Check
in with the Access Services Desk before using equipment. Typewriters are
also available for use in this area.
Entrance
and Exit: Exits are equipped
with an electronic system to detect materials not properly checked out.
If the voice-alarm sounds, please return to the Access Services desk for
assistance.
Legal
Assisting Room: This room is
used as a lab by the legal assisting program. When no class is in session,
this medium sized collection of current law books, especially emphasizing
Texas law, is available to everyone.
Outside
Book Drop: Book drops are located in front of the building and in the parking area behind the library. Please return books
here when the Library is closed.
Public
telephones are available in the foyer.
Student
Technology Centers: Computer
workstations equipped with a variety of word processing, graphic, spreadsheet,
and instructional software, and Internet access are available for use. These workstations are reserved for Del Mar students and University of Incarnate Word students with current validated ID's.
Technology
Instruction Center: This computer
classroom may be scheduled by faculty to provide supplemental training
on computers. Reservations are made through Access Services at 698-1309,
or 698-1310.
SECOND
FLOOR

DMCNet:
The Library’s fully automated
catalog provides access to all book and
audiovisual materials found in both DMC
Libraries.
Library Instruction Room: Teacher-scheduled instruction sessions on library
use and research techniques are conducted here. To arrange for a session, contact
the Reference Department, 698-1311.
Locked Cases: These cases contain fragile books and special collections, including
the Burt Escamilla Pennington collection of authors autographed books, which
may be consulted in the Reference area only. Ask at the Reference Desk for
access to these cases.
Periodical Stacks: Back issues of periodicals are shelved alphabetically by
title.
Popular Magazines: The latest issues of 120 of the library’s most popular magazines are kept here for easy access and leisure reading.
Reference Room: A variety of resources and services are available in the reference
room.
- Reference Desk: Reference staff are available to assist students with
research.
- Automated Databases: A variety of computer-based reference resources are
accessible from these databases.
- Microfilm Reader-Printers: Selected periodicals and the CALLER-TIMES back
to 1954 are on microfilm. Film may be viewed and copies made for 10 cents per
exposure. Reference staff are available for help in using reader-printers.
- Newspaper Area: Current issues of newspapers and large-format periodicals
are here.
- Photocopy machines
- Reference Book Stacks: Books noted as “Ref” in the automated catalog, indexes
and other resources are shelved by LC call number.
- Specialized Bibliographies: Those titles most frequently used in research
assignments at Del Mar are kept here.
- Vertical Files: Newspaper clippings on topics of local interest are arranged
by subject.
Reference Technology Center: A center for demonstrating the use of the
Internet, reference databases, and DMCNet. Training sessions are scheduled with
the Reference Department, 698-1311.
Study Rooms: Small group study rooms are for two or more students
at a time. Please note that these rooms muffle normal voice levels, but
are not soundproof. These rooms are subject to reservations by teachers
for class visits to the library. Request chalk/ markers for study boards
at the Access Services desk or the reference desk, whichever is most
convenient. Internet access is available with the use of notebook computers.
THIRD
FLOOR

Circulating Book Stacks: The third floor contains the
majority of the book collection which is arranged according to the Library of Congress Classification System. A brief
outline of the Library of Congress Classification System is available at the end of this document.
Computer Terminals: Computer terminals with access to the Internet are
placed throughout the floor. These terminals are available to everyone
using the library.
Displays: A variety of displays are located on this floor. The Billie
Trimble Chandler collection of paintings by Shoji Ohzawa illustrating
the life and times of Abraham Lincoln is displayed on the outside walls.
Aviation and history displays located on this floor include the Alfred
G. Trube model airplane collection, various military memorabilia and
remnants of the Berlin Wall donated by Michael Schulze, a former DMC
student. From time to time, there will also be special temporary displays
commemorating events of historical significance.
Drafting Tables: Drafting tables for student use are available on a
first-come, first-served basis.
Study rooms: Small group study rooms are for two or more students at
a time. Please note that these rooms muffle normal voice levels, but
are not soundproof. Request chalk/markers for study boards at the Access
Services Desk or at the reference desk, whichever is more convenient.
Internet access is available with notebook computers.
FOURTH
FLOOR
Computer Training Center: The center provides a classroom environment with computers
available for staff training and updates.
Distance Learning Classroom:
This classroom is equipped with distance
learning capabilities.
Distance Learning Department: This department oversees all forms of distance learning, including online and Virtual College of Texas. Information about distance learning course orientations is available: call 698 –1312 for information.
Grant Office: Administrative staff who assist college personnel in grant awards and administration are housed here.
Meeting Room: There is also a meeting room used for classes, media
showings, orientations, etc. This room is scheduled through Access Services,
698-1309 or 698-1310.
Teaching and Learning Center: A development center offering computer
training and professional seminars for Del Mar faculty and staff
FIFTH
FLOOR

Administrative Offices: Library director, office assistant, and storage areas.
Automation Services Office: Library staff and library systems are housed here.
Computer Terminals: Computer terminals with access to the Internet are placed throughout
the floor. These terminals are available to everyone using the library.
Conference Room: Small conference room
seating 8-10 persons which can be scheduled through Access Services, 698-1309 or 698-1310.
Corpus Christi Room: This room, displaying
numerous posters of the Corpus Christi area, is a general study area
Meeting/Computer rooms: These rooms are
used for specific classes at this time. When not being used by the assigned classes they can be scheduled through Access Services,
698-1309 or 698-1310.
Records Management Area: An administrative
area for storage of college records.
Sculpture Gallery: This is a collection
of the Library Purchase Awards from the National Drawing and Small Sculpture Competition sponsored annually by Del Mar College.

BARTH LEARNING RESOURCES CENTER - WEST CAMPUS

AV Viewing Area: A variety of audiovisual equipment is available for viewing AV resources. Check in with the Circulation Desk before using the equipment.
Circulating Book Shelves: The book collection is shelved according to the Library
of Congress classification system. These books may be checked out by library users.
Circulation Desk : All library materials, equipment, and Student Technology Center computers are checked out here. Audiovisual materials, stored in the office area behind the desk, may be requested here.
Classroom 102 : Primarily intended for library instruction, this computer-equipped room can also be scheduled by instructors for group meetings, video viewing, etc.
College I.D.'s : Student I.D.’s and badges for college employees are made at the Circulation Desk. I.D.’s can be made up until 30 minutes before closing. Receipts and picture I.D. will be required.
DMCNet:The library’s fully automated catalog provides access to all book and audiovisual materials found in both DMC Libraries.
Locked Case : The books kept in these locked cases constitute the L.E. Harville Architecture collection, many of which are rare and/or unusual.
Magazine/Periodical Back Issues : Print copies of serial titles owned by the library are shelved, in alphabetical order, in this area. Current issues of many popular serial titles are kept on the counter height shelving in the Lounge Area.
Reference Desk : A reference librarian is available to assist library users with their research, both print and computer-based. This desk has computers for students to do basic searching, and the reference book collection is located on counter height shelving adjacent to the desk.
Student Technology Center (STC):Computer workstations equipped with a variety of word processing, graphic, spreadsheet, and instructional software, and the Internet are available here. These workstations are reserved for Del Mar and University of the Incarnate Word students with current validated ID’s.
Study Areas: These areas are for general quiet study. Computers located in these areas may be used by anyone in the library.

Library Resource Sharing Program of Texas
The
Del Mar College Libraries participate in the TexShare Card Program.
The TexShare Card Program allows registered users or participating TexShare
libraries to have direct, personal access to library materials not available
at their public or academic libraries. Many Texas public libraries,
colleges, community colleges, and universities, both public and private,
participate in the Card program.
To
Take Advantage of the TexShare Card Program, Just Follow These Simple
Steps:
- Register for and receive
a TexShare Card from the Del Mar College Libraries. You must be
currently enrolled with a validated ID. TexShare Cards are issued
at the circulation desks of both libraries.They are good for one
semester.
- Consult the TexShare
web site to see the list of libraries which participate in the Card
Program and the specific lending policies of the library you wish
to visit.
- Present you TexShare
card at the reciprocating library's circulation's desk to activate
your checkout privileges. You may be required to show a photo ID.
- Select the books you
wish to borrow and check them out at the circulation desk. Remember
that fees will be assessed for lost, late, or damaged materials.
- When you're finished
with the materials, return them to the lending library either in
person or by first-class mail.
