Maritime Safety Training

This Coast Guard-approved entry level training course is for individuals wanting to get into the maritime field.

This course has four modules: Basic Firefighting, Personal Survival Techniques (swimming pool), Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities, Basic First Aid and CPR.

Completion of this course could lead to employment with a barge or tug/tow company, stevedore/longshoreman organization, or several others.

Where: Del Mar College - Windward Campus, 4101 Old Brownsville Road, Corpus Christi, TX; Workforce Development Center Room 126

When: Classes are one week long, held Monday through Friday 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM (40 hours)

Requirements: Students must have basic swimming skills. Men must be clean-shaven for the live burn. A DOT 7-Panel drug test is required prior to the start of class.

This Coast Guard-approved course satisfies the requirements of 46 CFR 11.302(d) and 12.602(d) for mariners who have previously held a Basic Safety Training endorsement under STCW and have at least 1 year of sea service within the last 5 years. The course is one day and requires students to complete live firefighting exercises and demonstrate survival skills in a swimming pool.

When: Classes are held all day, 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM (8 hours)

Requirements: Students must have completed Basic Safety Training within 5 years and completed 1 year of sea service within the last 5 years.

This Coast Guard-approved course satisfies the requirements of 46 CFR 11.337(a) for an STCW endorsement as Vessel Security Officer. This two-day course covers everything from maritime security policy to completing a ship security assessment to implementing the ship's security plan.

This Coast Guard-approved course satisfies the requirements of 46 CFR 11.201(h)(2) and STCW for advanced firefighting. This course is four days long and covers more in-depth firefighting concepts and procedures than the basic firefighting class, focusing on command and control elements. The student will also gain knowledge of fire prevention and the ability to inspect and service fire detection and extinguishing systems and equipment.

Requirements: Students must have previously taken the Basic Firefighting course.

This five day course will prepare mariners to act in the capacity of a Tank Barge Dangerous Liquids Person-In-Charge, or more commonly referred to as a tankerman.

Students will learn the basic properties of petroleum and its hazards, tank barge design and layout, and tank barge operations. They will also learn about pollution prevention and the actions to take during an emergency. Finally, students will learn about inert gas systems and marine vapor control, tank washing, and cargo and ballast pumps.
