The selection process is based on a point-system. It is recommended that the general education and science courses in the curriculum (nine co-requisite courses) should be completed prior to admission to the program.
The nine co-requisite courses are as follows:
- BIOL 2401 Human Anatomy and Physiology I
- CHEM 1406 Basic Chemistry
- BIOL 2402 Human Anatomy and Physiology II
- BIOL 2420 Microbiology for Health Sciences
- ENGL 1301 Composition I
- SOCI 1301 Introductory Sociology
- PSYC 2301 General Psychology
- Communications (SPCH) Elective
- Creative Arts OR Language, Philosophy and Culture Core Elective
To become a competitive applicant, the student should strive to complete as many co-requisite courses possible and achieve at least a “B” or better average in each of the nine co-requisite courses. Lastly, all science courses completed must be within a five-year period prior to enrollment in the Dental Hygiene program. Completion of the general education and science courses enhances a student’s selection to the program.
The criteria are as follows:
- Cumulative GPA
- 3.5 – 4.0 = 5 points
- 3.0 – 3.49 = 4 points
- 2.5 – 2.99 = 3 points
- Letter grades for completed curriculum science courses: BIOL 2401, BIOL 2402, BIOL 2420, CHEM 1406 (Minimum grade acceptable for the Dental Hygiene AAS degree is a “C.”)
- A = 10 points
- B = 8 points
- C = 6 points
- D/F = 0 points
- Letter grades for completed curriculum general education courses: ENGL 1301, PSYC 2301, SOCI 1301, Communications (SPCH) Core Elective, and Creative Arts OR Language, Philosophy and Culture Core Elective (Minimum grade acceptable for the Dental Hygiene AAS degree is a “C.”)
- A = 8 points
- B = 6 points
- C = 4 points
- D/F = 0 points
For additional points (not required for admission):
- Currently enrolled in DMC CODA Dental Assisting Program (must successfully complete program) OR Graduate of DMC CODA Dental Assisting Program
- 10 points
- Graduate of a CODA Dental Assisting Program (to exclude DMC)
- 5 points
- Certified Dental Assistant (CDA)
- 3 points
- Terminal Degree (highest degree achieved)
- Masters degree = 3 points
- Bachelors degree = 2 points
- Associates degree = 1 point
The above criteria are weighted to arrive at a score for each applicant. The Selection Committee selects the 24 highest scoring as primary candidates and the others are alternates ranked also by their scores. If a primary candidate withdraws his/her application, the vacancy is filled by an alternate with the highest score on the alternate list. This process continues until the class of 24 is filled.
A selection committee, consisting of the program director and program faculty, will meet in March to select the next class. All applicants will be notified by email, of the selection committee's decisions, by March 31st. Applicants not selected are advised to contact Del Mar College's Student Enrollment Center or Dental Hygiene Program Director for advice concerning their academic goals.
