Multifactor Authentication (MFA)

Multifactor Authentication (MFA)

Problems using MFA?

Contact Viking Help Desk at (361) 698-2330 to request an MFA reset. You will then be able re-register a new phone number or new device. Requests for MFA and password resets cannot be completed by email.

What is MFA?

Using a password alone leaves your information vulnerable to hacking, placing your personal information at risk. Multifactor authentication is an additional security step when signing in with your Del Mar College email and password.

How MFA Works

First, you will set up a verification device so Microsoft can deliver a code to it. Then, each time you log in you will enter the code on the screen, which verifies your identity.

Common delivery options include text message, phone call, and push notification to an MFA app. These are common because most people carry a phone with them at all times.

Setting up MFA

Note: As best practice, Del Mar College recommends using an MFA app as your primary option and adding a backup option such as text or phone call.

You will be prompted to set up a primary verification device after signing into Microsoft 365 with your DMC email address.

Step 1

When prompted, select Next to choose a verification method.

  • I don't have a device

The college may be able to provide an MFA security fob if there is a need. If you've reached this step and can not sign in, please contact Viking Help Desk at (361) 698-2330.

Add a backup option

DMC recommends that you set up a backup verification method to ensure you do not lose access to your account. You may add a backup option and manage your verification devices anytime by going to https://mysignins.microsoft.com/security-info.

On the following screen you can add/remove sign-in methods and change the default method.

Note:

  • Due to recent changes by Microsoft, security questions and email address cannot be used for MFA. They will work for password resets only.
  • Employees should not use their Teams phone extension because it is tied to their work account.
  • If you get a new device or phone number, you will need to contact Viking Help Desk to request an MFA reset.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is MFA required?

Yes. All employee accounts must be protected by MFA. Starting in October 2024, student accounts will be protected by MFA.

  • What services will require MFA?

Any Del Mar College service that uses single sign on (the same credentials you use for your email or Canvas) will require MFA.

  • What happens if I lose my phone or other device that I use for MFA?

DMC recommends all users set up multiple methods of authentication to reduce issues if a phone or device is not available. If none of your devices are available, call Viking Help Desk at (361) 698-2330 to request an MFA reset.

  • Do I have to verify my identity every time I log in?

You must use MFA every time you start a new session. If you use single sign on with MFA and then quit your browser, you will need to sign in again with MFA.

  • Do I have to have a smartphone to use MFA?

No. You can receive a text message to any cell phone or use the phone call method.

  • Should I enroll more than one device?

Yes. DMC recommends users register multiple methods to ensure they do not lose access to their account.

  • What do I do if I get a new phone?

You should use the backup feature inside the MFA app. You can also register both an authentication phone and an alternative phone to ensure you don't lose access to your account. If you still cannot access your account, call Viking Help Desk at (361) 698-2330 to request an MFA reset.

  • What if I don't have a phone?

The college may be able to provide an MFA security fob if there is a need. Please contact Viking Help Desk at (361) 698-2330.
