Student Success Center (SSC) Tutoring Session Guidelines

Guests who use the SSC should prepare by:

I must sign in and out of the center using my Del Mar College (DMC) Student ID or alert staff that I'm a guest and do not have a DMC Student ID.

I recognize that tutoring is a support tool, not a substitute for course instruction and attendance. The tutor will never do my work for me.

I will come prepared with my syllabus, professor’s feedback from previous assignments, assignment instructions, a written draft, homework questions, textbook, and by reading class materials ahead of time.

I will keep my area clean and not bring food into the center. I will comply with policies, regulations, and procedures of Del Mar College and the Student Success Center (SSC).

I will respect the rights of other students.

I will not view inappropriate images on campus and classrooms.

I will not use inappropriate language on campus and classrooms.

During a tutoring session, I will refrain from checking email and posting to social media.

I agree to try strategies suggested by my tutor.

I will exercise responsible use of SSC resources.

I will evaluate tutor services as requested by the SSC.

I recognize that my relationship with the tutor is professional and not personal.

If multiple students require the services of the same tutor, a 30 minute tutor time limit will be imposed.

Students who use the SSC should expect tutors to:

As a tutor I will guide students/tutee along a path of student independence.  I recognize that good tutoring enables students to transfer learning from one situation to another.

As a tutor I will not give answers or do the tutee’s work for him or her. I will not tutor any form of tests, including take-home tests/essays.

As a tutor I understand that my relationship with my student/tutee is professional and not personal.  I will avoid establishing inappropriate relationships with tutees.

As a tutor I will respect individual differences based on age, sex, gender, race, ethnicity, culture, national origin, religion, sexual orientation, disability, language, and socioeconomics.

As a tutor I will not use a tutoring situation to impose or proselytize my personal values on students.

As a tutor I will be on time in the center ready to tutor according to the schedule I have agreed to with SSC management.

As a tutor I will not comment negatively on faculty, other tutors, or the nature of assignments.

As a tutor I will maintain student confidentially at all times.

As a tutor I will not insult my student with false hope or empty flattery.

As a tutor I will give them time to work independently during the session.

Students who use the SSC should know that:

Another tutor may have to take over the if the current tutor’s shift is over or a tutor needs assistance

Some tutors may need to move to another student, but this does not mean that tutors are refusing to help.

Tutors may rotate among several students when the Center is busy.

Students may be asked to join a group working on similar material.

Tutors do not know everything pertaining to the courses they tutor, as many are also students, but instructors can be consulted during their office hours.

As a tutoring center the SSC will:

SSC fosters academic achievement through a supportive, culturally safe, and conducive learning environment.

SSC will address issues and work toward a prompt resolution.

SSC strives to maintain excellence by staffing only the most qualified tutors who meet College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) standards.

SSC vets every tutor to ensure firm grasp of course content.
