Associate Vice President for Student Affairs

Associate Vice President for Student Affairs

Cheryl Sanders

From November 2011 to May 2021, Mrs. Sanders served as Dean of Student Engagement at Del Mar College and Retention and was responsible for providing administrative support for student success through student engagement and support services. The departments she led encourage and complement student learning by providing quality services and programs that enrich students’ growth.

Prior to her tenure at Del Mar College, Mrs. Sanders served in various Student Affairs positions at Maryland Institute College of Art (Baltimore, MD), Fisk University (Nashville, TN), Rhodes College (Memphis, TN), and the University of Florida (Gainesville, FL).

Mrs. Sanders' academic journey, coupled with her 26 years of progressively responsible experience and leadership in student affairs at the higher education level, has uniquely equipped her to focus on student engagement and success. A native of Mississippi, she received both her Bachelor of Science degree in Educational Psychology and her Master of Science degree in Counselor Education with an Emphasis in Higher Education Student Development from Mississippi State University, a testament to her dedication and passion for student affairs.

In spring 2021, recognizing the need for advocates to promote women's rights and civil rights on campus, she spearheaded the creation of a new student organization, Del Mar College American Association of University Women, and currently serves as the primary advisor. When she is not assisting students, staff, and faculty at Del Mar College, Mrs. Sanders is actively involved in the community and is always ready to provide opportunities for others to grow and succeed.

Mrs. Sanders has held volunteer and board member roles in several local organizations, including Beautify Corpus Christi Association, the Junior League of Corpus Christi, Inc., the Texas Association of Black Personnel in Higher Education Corpus Christi, the American Association of University Women Corpus Christi Branch, NAACP Corpus Christi, 100 Women of the Coastal Bend and Dress for Success Corpus Christi, which all reflect her deep commitment to community service and her belief in the power of collective action.

Mrs. Sanders can be reached by email at studentaffairs@delmar.edu or by phone at (361) 698-2250. Her office is located in MUSB 312B on the Heritage Campus.
