Grant Announcement

What is Project SENDA? 

In Spanish, “senda” means path. Project SENDA is a $2.8 million U.S. Department of Education Title V grant that will support the new Project SENDA (Students Engaged in Direct Advising) initiative that’s designed to lead more students down a path to success. 

The five-year grant began Oct. 1, 2020 with Del Mar College receiving $600,000 each year to support the components of the project. Del Mar College was one of 31 institutions out of 400 applicants nationwide to receive the Title V grant.

  • Meet our Staff

    David Barrera, Jr., Director, Project SENDA

    David Barrera Jr. is the current Director of Project SENDA, a federally funded Title V Grant. His experience working with diverse populations as an adjunct instructor and Director of TRiO programs has empowered him to recognize the student perspective and its impact on student success. Mr. Barrera also serves on the state board for the Texas Association of Chicanos in Higher Education (TACHE) as the South Region Representative for a term that expires in 2023.

    His academic credentials include a Bachelor of Science in Criminology and a Master of Science in Sociology from Texas A&M University-Kingsville. He is currently a Ph.D. student studying Higher Education Leadership for Changing Populations at Notre Dame of Maryland University (Baltimore, MD). His research interests include Latino males in the higher education pipeline, community colleges, and developmental education.

    Benjamin Hernandez, MAP Advisor- Communications, Fine Arts & Social Sciences

    Benjamin Hernandez comes to us from the Systems Office of Ivy Tech Community College of Indiana (Indianapolis, IN), where his responsibilities included admissions, advising, retention, and strategic planning for international services. Prior to his Ivy Tech tenure, he served as adjunct faculty in the Department of Communication and Culture at Indiana University (Bloomington, IN). 

    His academic credentials include a Bachelor of Arts, cum laude, from Vanderbilt University (Nashville, TN) and a Master of Arts in Communication and Culture from Indiana University.

    Cecilia Gamboa, MAP Advisor- Nurse Education

    Cecilia Gamboa Headshot

    Cecilia Gamboa serves as the MAP Advisor for Nurse Education. Mrs. Gamboa has over 20 years of experience in higher education, including: Embedded Advisor for Business Administration, Career Development Counselor, and Pre-Pharmacy Coordinator at Texas A&M University, Rangel College of Pharmacy.

    Her academic credentials include an Associate of Arts from Del Mar College and a Bachelor of Business Administration from Texas A&M University-Kingsville.

    In her spare time, she takes pleasure in her hobbies of photography and gardening, she also serves as a director of religious education and has a passion for children and youth ministry. She enjoys spending time with her husband, her 4 children, and 8 beautiful grandchildren.
