What is a Certified Nurse Aide?

Certified Nursing Aides (CNAs) help care for physically or mentally ill, injured, disabled, or infirmed individuals confined to hospitals, long term care nursing facilities, and mental health settings. Aides perform routine tasks under the supervision of nursing and medical staff.

Duties may include:

  • Serving meals
  • Making beds
  • Helping patients to eat, dress, and bathe
  • Answering patients' call lights
  • Providing skin care to patients
  • Taking the patient's temperature, pulse rate, respiration rate, and blood pressure
  • Assisting patients in getting into and out of bed and walking
  • Keeping patients' rooms neat
  • Observing and monitoring patients' physical, mental, and emotional conditions and reporting changes to the nursing or medical staff

Admission Requirements

  • Completed Nurse Aide Training Packet Open Enrollment Packet (contact CE for packet)
  • Completed health history form
  • Copy of criminal background check confirmation page from PRECHECK, INC.
  • Copies of required immunization records
  • Current TB results, within the last year
  • Drug screen
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) for Health Care Professionals (CPR)

Please submit copies of immunizations with your completed application to the Continuing Education office in the Center for Economic Development, Room 115. You may also email the information to ce@delmar.edu.

  • Course Descriptions

    NURA 1001 Certified Nurse Aide (CNA)

    Classroom and Laboratory preparation for entry level nursing assistants to achieve a level of knowledge, skills, and abilities essential to provide basic care to residents of long-term care facilities. Topics include resident's rights, communication, safety, observation, reporting and assisting residents in maintaining basic comfort and safety. Emphasis on effective interaction with members of the health care team. Concurrent enrollment in NURA 1060 is required.

    NURA 1060 Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) - Clinical

    A continuation of NURA 1001 that includes a health-related work-based learning experience that enables the student to apply specialized occupational theory, skills, and concepts for entry level nursing assistants. Direct supervision is provided by the clinical instructor and clinical training is conducted at a local long term care facility. Course cost includes the Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services registry examination fee. Concurrent enrollment in NURA 1001 is required. Prerequisites: NURA 1001 and required immunizations.
